THE RIP
Written By Jonathan Hansen
This movie has so much potential to be so much better than what it turned out as. Its not bad. Its very enjoyable for a number of different reasons but this one could've been top tier. The writing is really great at times and really bad at times. When the movie starts tying its loose ends together, the exposition is ridiculous and on the nose. They basically explain verbatim, through dialogue, how everything went down. Id rather be shown, not told. There are several moments where more silence would have been useful rather than fill it with response or dialogue. With that said, sometimes the dialogue was fantastic. They totally nailed the archetypes of what we want in a police movie. The vibe is great, which makes it captivating to watch. Matt Damon has no idea how to hold guns and its painful to watch. Surprising considering he's Jason Bourne. The way Ben Affleck says "Hialeah" is enough to enrage any South Floridian. The movie starts strong and ends sloppy. But all together i actually enjoyed it. Im thinking I may like it better on the second watch. That’s how I felt about Den of Thieves. It was just ok, but I liked it more the second time. Den of Thieves is good, but its not Heat or the Town. The Rip is good but its not Narc or Brooklyns Finest.
